Still Not Sure About POPIA & PAIA in 2025? Here’s What You Need to Know

It’s been a full year since the Information Regulator changed how businesses register their Information Officers and submit PAIA reports. And guess what? A lot of people are still unsure if they’re doing it right—and that’s totally understandable.

If you’re feeling a bit lost, you’re not alone. Let’s clear things up together and make sure you’re on the right track.

Do I Still Need to Re-Register My Information Officer?

Yes, and here’s why.

In May 2024, the Information Regulator launched a new eServices portal for POPIA and PAIA. If you registered before that, you probably need to re-register on the updated system.

And even if you already did that—if your business details or Information Officer changed since then, you’ll need to update it again.

👉 What to do:

It only takes a few minutes—but saves a lot of stress down the line.

Do I Still Need to Submit a PAIA Report?

Yes—you need to submit one every year.

The PAIA “Access to Information” report is due by 30 June every year. It’s not a once-off requirement. Think of it like your annual tax return—but for compliance.

👉 Here’s what to do:

  • Complete the report or contact Chamlabour for assistance

  • Complete it with your business info

  • Submit it via their eServices portal or email (check their latest instructions)

It doesn’t have to be complicated—but missing it can create unnecessary headaches.

Common Questions We’re Still Getting

Here are just a few of the things we hear all the time:

“I thought we registered already—do we really have to do it again?”
“What is a PAIA report?”
“Who should be listed as our Information Officer?”

If you’re asking these questions too, you’re not alone! That’s why we’ve created this blog—to help you make sense of it all.

What Happens If You Don’t Comply?

No scare tactics here—just the facts. If you skip these steps, the Information Regulator could:

  • Open an investigation into your business

  • Issue penalties or warnings

  • Flag you during audits (especially for B-BBEE or ISO compliance)

Plus, if a client asks for your compliance documents and you’re not ready—it could cost you credibility or even a deal.
